Clean Your Dryer Vent Hose

Cleaning the short duct behind a dryer is only part of vent maintenance. The exhaust path must stay clear all the way to the outdoor hood. Slow drying can also have causes other than lint.

Before you start

Read the dryer manual. Let the dryer cool, unplug it, and gather a vacuum, gloves, and the correct duct clamps. For a gas dryer, do not move it far enough to strain its gas connector or disconnect the gas line yourself. Arrange service if access requires that work.

Clean and reconnect

1. Photograph the duct route and disconnect the accessible transition duct as its clamps permit.
2. Vacuum accessible lint from the duct and exhaust opening without pushing it farther into the appliance. Do not open the dryer cabinet unless qualified.
3. Inspect for crushing, tears, or unsuitable plastic duct. Use the metal duct type and routing required by the dryer manual and local rules.
4. Have the complete duct to the exterior cleaned if it is long, inaccessible, or beyond your tools’ reach. Cleaning behind the machine does not prove the wall duct is clear.
5. Reconnect securely without crushing or kinking the duct as you position the dryer. Restore power only after everything is assembled.

Check the result

Run the dryer and verify the outdoor damper opens and exhaust flows. Stop for a burning smell, excessive heat, or continued poor drying, and arrange service. Clean the lint screen every load and schedule vent inspection to match use and the manual.
